Fourth Son South, an alternative indie pop rock band from South Africa, has released their latest single, The Moon, featuring Sarah Jade Gardiner on vocals and harmonies.
This is the second single the band has released with Gardiner, and they are currently working on a new EP, which will showcase the evolved lineup. The additional vocals and harmonies have added a new dimension to the band’s already strong songs. Peter Toussaint, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, has stated that the inspiration for The Moon came from the belief that the moon has a great influence on emotions and relationships. The Moon has been a defining influence in various aspects of life, from werewolves to mental health and the success of relationships.
The band was formed by Dutch-born guitar maestro Peter Toussaint, who released his debut solo album ‘One Day’ in 2018. He then enlisted bass player Franco Jamneck and drummer Carel Viljoen to form the trio ‘Peter T Band’, which later evolved into Fourth Son South. In 2019, the band recorded their debut EP ‘Another Mile’, which was released in April 2020, coinciding with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the lockdown, Toussaint wrote and recorded songs that formed the basis of the band’s first full-length album, ‘The Sounds Around Your Head’. They subsequently released another single, ‘Hold On’, in July 2021, with guitarist Dale McHardy joining the band to perfect their live sound.
In February 2022, Franco Jamneck left the band, prompting Toussaint to focus on multi-harmonies. Bernhard Viljoen, a bass player with exceptional vocal harmonies, was recruited, and the band released their EP ‘Machine’. The success of their single and music video for ‘Tomorrow’s Better’ featuring Melissa Osborne on vocals led Toussaint to recruit female singer Meel Vignetting. She played with the band briefly before Sarah Jade Gardiner joined as a full-time member. Gardiner, an experienced singer and music teacher from Johannesburg, won the Performing Arts Competition South Africa (PACISA). Her vocal capabilities and warm personality complete the current lineup of Fourth Son South.

The band has enjoyed success with their previous singles, including ‘Secret Place’ (Another Mile), ‘They Run, We Hide’, ‘Positive’, ‘Reflections’ (The Sounds Around Your Head), ‘Hold On’, ‘Tomorrow’s Better’ (Machine), and ‘The Cold’, which have all received significant airplay globally, especially in the US and UK. They have also been interviewed on various radio stations, including Jacaranda and MIX FM in South Africa and around the world. Their previous single, ‘The Cold’, even reached #1 on the 5fm Indie Chart. Fourth Son South has performed at notable shows and festivals, such as Woodcrock, STRAB, Bos Boogie, and represented South Africa at the international La Ley del Rock Online Festival held in Argentina and Italy.
