Being invincible means different things to different people, but we can all agree that choosing to focus on the good times you’ve had in your life, instead of the bad, can be empowering.
We Were Invincible, a brand-new single by Kris Valery, celebrates exactly that – it is a nostalgic country-rock song about remembering all the good and bad times that formed you into the person you are today.
The inspiration for the song, penned by William Brandon Good and Thomas Dudley Story II, was based on the feeling that good times will always overpower the bad. “The lyrics take me back to my teenage years and remind me that bad choices in history are there for you to learn from, the good ones keep you focused to overcome the bad choices you made… and that makes me feel invincible,” he explains.
While the country may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the song should appeal to a wide audience. “People will connect with the song because it will transport them back to their youth and make them feel invincible, even when times are tough,” says Kris.
The Pretoria born singer and guitarist has been working in the music industry since 2004. He was exposed to music from a very young age, with talented musicians on both his father and mother’s side. He got his first plastic guitar at the age of three, which captivated his imagination and built a sound foundation for what was to come. Later, at the age of fourteen, his father bought him his first real six string acoustic guitar and the rest is history.
He entered the music industry as part of the duo, Amplitude, followed by various other collaborations with groups and individuals like Gerrit Woest, Gif, Grass Root Level and Gert Koevert.
One of his biggest career highlights was being part of the Ghoema acclaimed duo, Heuning, which had several number one hits on local radio stations and was also signed with the world-renowned label, David Gresham Records.
In addition to being an accomplished performer and session musician, Kris also established Kris Valery Productions in 2019. This fully equipped studio offers professional recording services for music distribution and backing tracks.
Although he has a great appreciation for various genres, he admits that rock music is his favourite. Early in his career, artists like Hank Marvin from The Shadows, Nokie Edwards from The Ventures, Brian May, and the late Hansie Roodt greatly influenced his musical path. Later, he also came across artists like Steve Lukather, Gary Moore, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Their style of music had a massive influence on him and this paved the way for his style of musical performances today.
Apart from being a full-time musician, he enjoys spending as much time as possible with his wife and son.
Kris Valery is more than just your typical guy performing at the local pub. He is a versatile musician who wants to touch audiences with his music. “The joy of seeing people’s faces light up when I pick up my guitar and move in behind the mic to sing inspires me to create music,” he concludes.
